Updating the Virus Definition (DAT) File Every day new viruses appear, so ensure that your computer is always protected by keeping the anti-virus software up to date. McAfee regularly updates a virus definition ( DAT) file and makes it available on the McAfee Website for users to download to combat new virus threats as they emerge.
Each DAT file brings new detection and cleaning capabilities to McAfee VirusScan 9.8/Endpoint Protection for Mac. The program is set up to check for DAT updates every day. If an update is available, it will be downloaded and installed automatically. Scanning Your Computer for Viruses The McAfee VirusScan for Mac 9.8 On-access Scan setting is enabled and scanning takes place every time you create or access an item, like a file or folder. When a virus is found, the primary action is Clean.
If that action fails, the item is Quarantined. On-demand Scanning is also available.

Version tested: 1.1.0 Date of testing: August 7, 2012 Last updated: August 7, 2012 Hardware used:. Malware sample count: 5 Macs supported: Intel and PowerPC OS supported: 10.4 Tiger, 10.5 Leopard, 10.6 Snow Leopard, 10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion Price: $109.65 for 3 licenses.
For some reason a single license can not be purcased. Compatibility: McAfee supports supports a very wide range of Macs which not a lot of antivirus companies can say. This is important because this usually means the company will support it’s product for a longer time than other companies. You do not want to invest in a product/brand that will drop support for you every time a new version or OS is released. Installation and setup: Downloading the trial software required us to fill out a lengthy form before we got to download the file, once downloaded installation was easy. Once installed McAfee does not start an update, you have to do this manually.
As the database included in the installed version is a year and a half old an update is badly needed. The first two updates failed on both the MacBook Pro and iMac, the third installed OK. On the both Mac mini’s the first update took right away. A little shield icon in the menubar gives you quick access to the application and preferences and tells you if your Mac is secure or not, it does not tell you if a scan is running or anything else is going on in the background. After installing no restart was required. Resource usage: We found Processor and RAM usage very acceptable on both the Intel Mac mini and the iMac.
Both computers had plenty of both to spare. Update frequency: Their support website states the application updates it’s database every hour, we have not seen this on any of the test systems. In fact in the few days we had the software installed it did not update unless we told it to. This, in our opinion, is one feature that should work flawlessly in any anti-virus application. Features: Antivirus, anti malware, and background scanning. Scanning: We tested McAfee on all Macs and had it scan the boot drive. Here are the results: iMac: 70 Minutes Mac mini Intel: 89 Minutes Mac mini G4: 106 Minutes MacBook Pro: When we selected our boot drive for scanning on the MacBook Pro and clicked “Start Scan” it threw us an error “Unknown error received from scanners”.
It allowed us to drag any drive, partition or file to the scan window but not the boot drive. We had to select “Name’s MacBook Pro” and assume this included the boot drive. We tried with our User folder and even another drive, the error persisted. Even after a restart and a re-install we could not start a scan of any kind so we uninstalled it on the MacBook Pro. Detection: As it did not run properly on our MacBook Pro it did not detect a single bad file.
On the iMac it only found one bad file, the EICAN test file. Same goes for the Mac mini’s. With other infected files and macKeeper that were not detected we have no choice but to label McAfee Security for Mac a complete fail. Tampering: We were able to terminate currently running scans but not any of the other background processes. This should mean that any virus or malware that attempts to disable McAfee will fail as the On-access, On-demand and Update processes will keep running.
Uninstall: An uninstaller script is placed in the Applications folder. It’s a very simple terminal script and clears most traces of the software from your system. We did find it left some files in the Library folder, these had to be deleted manually. No restart required.
